Liminal and Brain.fm both use sound to help you focus, relax or sleep, but they take opposite approaches. Brain.fm gives you finished music engineered by its own team; you pick an activity and press play. Liminal gives you an instrument: you choose the frequencies, the layers and the shape of the session, or start from a preset. Here's how they compare, including where Brain.fm is the better choice.

How each one works

Brain.fm describes its technology as patented neural entrainment: modulation built into the music within each stereo channel, which it says produces stronger neural phase locking than binaural beats. You choose an activity, such as Deep Work, Creativity, Power Nap or Deep Sleep, and Brain.fm plays music designed for it.

Liminal works with the classic tools of brainwave entrainment. Send a slightly different tone to each ear and your brain perceives a beat at the difference: 200 Hz and 210 Hz becomes a 10 Hz Alpha rhythm. You can set that carrier and beat by ear, jump to a named band from Delta to Gamma, add isochronic pulses or Solfeggio tones, and layer rain, forest or drones underneath.
