🎧 Best with headphones: the beat is built from the difference between your ears.
The mechanism
Send 200 Hz to one ear and 210 Hz to the other. Your brain resolves the 10 Hz gap into a rhythm that isn't in either channel. Some research suggests brainwaves may drift toward that rhythm, though the evidence is mixed.
It exists in neither channel: an Alpha-range rhythm your brain constructs from the gap between the two tones. Whether brainwaves then follow it (entrainment) is still debated, and effects are modest and vary from person to person.

Inside Liminal
Head still racing at bedtime? Guided sessions, written with AI and narrated, pair the frequency with pace and breath.
Need to lock in at your desk? Dial carrier and beat by ear, or drop straight onto a named band.
Noisy room? Rain, forest, drones: stacked underneath the tones and mixed to taste.
Not sure which band you need? Say it in your own words and we translate it into a tuned session.
Starting from zero? A seven-day program that deepens as the routine becomes familiar.

Sleep · Delta
I've struggled to quiet my mind at night for years. I started using Liminal's sleep frequencies before bed, and it's become part of my nightly routine. I love being able to put on my headphones, close my eyes, and just let everything slow down.
Focus · Beta
The binaural beats are what sold me. I work in a pretty distracting environment, and the Focus sessions help me settle into my work without constantly reaching for my phone. It's like having a little mental reset button.
Calm · Alpha
Some days my brain just won't shut off. Instead of scrolling or putting on another podcast, I open Liminal and choose Calm or Release. Even ten or fifteen minutes gives me a chance to disconnect from everything going on around me.
Frequencies · 432 Hz & Solfeggio
I originally downloaded Liminal because I was curious about 432 Hz and Solfeggio frequencies. Now I use it almost every day. Being able to explore different frequencies and soundscapes depending on how I'm feeling is my favorite part.
Meditation · Theta
I've tried a bunch of meditation apps, but I never really connected with guided meditation. Liminal is different. I can just listen to the frequencies, get comfortable, and let my mind wander. No one telling me what to think or how to feel. I love that.

Questions
It depends on you. Some research suggests brainwaves may drift toward the rhythm of a binaural beat, but the evidence is mixed, and effects are modest and vary from person to person. Many people find a steady, tuned sound helps them settle either way. The free tier is there so you can find out for yourself.
For binaural beats, yes: the beat is built from the difference between your two ears, so speakers can't produce it. Isochronic tones pulse a single tone on and off, so they work on speakers too.
Free includes preset sessions across every band, simple tone control with one soundscape, and the journal and streaks, with no expiry. Pro unlocks the full instrument: the advanced rack, 5-band EQ, unlimited layers, the full soundscape and session libraries, the session designer and offline downloads.
Open Settings in the app and choose Manage subscription. That opens Stripe's billing portal, where you can cancel your plan. There's no call or email needed.
